Church recognized at Heroes Breakfast

Kyle Church, a ninth grade student at DCS, was recognized at the annual November Heroes Breakfast hosted by the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Heroes Breakfast annually honors nine local heroes and 13 Delaware County students whose winning essays affirm heroes through their creative writing. Kyle, who was the high school winner of this contest, responded to the prompt “One Person Who Changed the World” and wrote about Abraham Lincoln whose leadership held America together so our nation could grow into a strong country to which the world looks for help. Kyle’s essay was read during the program following the breakfast, and he also received a gift pack and Wal-Mart gift card. The following is his submitted essay.

The man who changed the world

By Kyle Church

Smoke was rising from the small fire in the middle of the camp and it was an extreme contrast to the icy rain which soaked Abraham Lincoln’s coat. Although the warm fire was rather inviting, Abe chose to walk alone outside of the camp. He noticed the fresh pools of blood that mixed in with the rain. He could hardly stand the fact of this long bloody war. He knew he had to end the war soon or America would be lost forever. As these thoughts passed through his mind, a large tear drop rolled down his cheek; could he bring his soldiers  and his country out of the war? Would the world be the same or would it be changed forever?

Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States, brought together the most powerful nation. A nation that changed the world. If not America, who would the world look to for help? If we weren’t there who would be there ready to fight for those in need? The world needs an America and Abraham Lincoln brought us together. We owe not our lives, but our nation to Abraham Lincoln. He is the man who changed the world.
